1.  Competition Overview

Each contestant will be given 30 days prior to MOSC2010 to select any PHP based Open Source applications (preferably compatible with the Windows platform as it would make the port to the Azure Cloud more seamless), port it over to the Microsoft Azure Cloud platform using either the Microsoft Azure SDK OR the ZendPHP SDK.  The ported applications, will have to be offered as a “Software as a Service (SaaS)”, i.e. based on the existing OSS applications available in OSS repositories (or the contestant’s own), they are to create services that can be offered on the cloud and be monetized e.g. online payroll service, check processing, social network service, etc.
 
To help the contestants familiarize themselves with the cloud platform, Microsoft and ZendPHP will hold a series of Clinics and Workshops 2 weeks before the start of the competition.
 

2.  Competition mechanics

Interested contestants must register at the competition web site http://conf.oss.my/mtc/

If contestants are interested in learning more about the Azure Cloud to help them with the competition can register their interest at the competition web site http://conf.oss.my/mtc/.  However, due to logistic issues, the workshops are only offered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
 
3.  Important dates to remember
  • May 15, 2010 – Registration for the competition and workshop begins
  • May 19, 2010 – Workshops and Clinics begins
  • May 29, 2010 – “Milking the Cow” competition begins
  • June 14, 2010 – Polls will be open to the public to vote for the winners
  • June 29, 2010 – MOSC2010

4.  Competition fee

The competition and workshops are completely free of charge
 

5.  Types of applications that can be used

The contestants are confined to only use any PHP-based Open Source applications from any repositories, so long as they don’t infringe the legal rights of usage dtefined by the respective application used.
 

6.  Contestants

Contestants can participate as any one of the following entities.
  • Individuals
  • Team
  • Companies

7.  Judging

The judging will be done by:
  • Organizing committee judges
  • Consist of one individual from i.e. MDeC, Microsoft, ZendPHP, and PHP.net.my. 
  • The committee's scoring will carry a total 30% weightage to the contestant’s total points.
  • The organizing committee judging will be done immediately after the closing of competition time
  • The organizing committee judging will have the right eliminate any bogus or rigged public voting
  • Public votes
  • Consist of the general public who will be allowed to vote on the MTC site.
  • The public votes will carry a total 70% weightage to the contestants total points.
  • Public voting will begin on June 14, 2010 @ 12:00 AM and end on June 29, 2010 @ 12:00 AM
8.  Judging Criteria
  • Business potential of the ported application offered as a service
  • Operational functionalities of the ported application

9.  Eligibility criteria:

If you are an individual participating by yourself, in a team, or under a company, you will need to fulfill the following criteria:
  • You are 16 years of age or older; and
  • You are not an employee or intern of MDeC/Microsoft Corporation/ZendPHP or subsidiary
  • You are not involved in any part of the execution or administration of this Competition; and
  • You are not an immediate family member of (parent, sibling, spouse, child) or household member of MDeC/Microsoft Corporation/ZendPHP or subsidiary

10.  What if something unexpected happens and the competition can’t run as planned?

If someone cheats, or a virus, bug, catastrophic event, or any other unforeseen or unexpected event that cannot be reasonably anticipated or controlled, (also referred to as force majeure) affects the fairness and / or integrity of this Competition, we reserve the right to cancel, change or suspend this Competition. This right is reserved whether the event is due to human or technical error. If a solution cannot be found to restore the integrity of the Competition, we reserve the right to select winners from among all eligible entries received before we had to cancel, change or suspend the Competition. If you attempt to compromise the integrity or the legitimate operation of this Competition by hacking or by cheating or committing fraud in ANY way, we may seek damages from you to the fullest extent permitted by law. Further, we may ban you from participating in any of our future Competition, so please play fairly.
 
11.  Limitations of liability:
  • By entering this competition, each contestants shall agree:
  • To abide by the Official Rules; and
  • To abide by the respective application licensing laws used by the contestants, and
  • To the extent allowable under applicable law, to release and hold us and our Sponsors, and our respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, employees and agents from any and all liability or any injury, loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with this Competition or any prize won; and
  • That our decisions will be final and binding on all matters related to this Competition; and
  • That, by accepting a prize, we may use of your proper name and state of residence online and in print, or in any other media, in connection with this Competition, without payment or compensation to you, except where prohibited by law.
  • This Competition will be governed by the laws of Malaysia, and you consent to the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the courts of Malaysia for any disputes arising out of this Competition.
